NFL Favourites Behind at Half-Time: Win and Cover Rates by Deficit
The spread favourite is behind at the break in roughly a third of NFL games. Here is how often it recovers to win, and how rarely it covers.

- When the NFL spread favourite is behind at half-time, how often does it still win and cover, by size of deficit and size of spread?

Every Sunday a favourite walks into the locker room behind, and the instinct is that class will tell. Across 7,256 games from 1999-2025, the favourite trailed at half-time in 2,526 of them, 35.0% of all games with a favourite. I wanted to know what that deficit actually does to its chances.
The short answer: trailing favourites won 36.3% of the time, down from 66.4% across all games, and only 17.9% covered. The size of the hole matters most, but the size of the spread pushes back hard. My NFL betting tips page is where I apply this kind of game-state thinking to the week's card.
Break 1The half-time deficit decides almost everything
Each bar splits trailing favourites into three outcomes: won and covered, won without covering, and did not win. Down 1-3, the favourite still won 54.8% of 615 games, so a field-goal deficit barely dents its chances. By down 8-13 the did-not-win share climbs to 75.4, and at 14 or more it reaches 85.6.
Look at the darkest slice too. Won and covered falls from 28.8 at down 1-3 to 5.4 at down 14+. Even when a favourite claws back, it rarely does it by enough to clear the number.
"Won, no cover" includes pushes. Ties count as did not win.

| Won and covered | Won, no cover | Did not win | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Down 1-3 (615) | 28.8% | 26.0% | 45.2% |
| Down 4-7 (857) | 20.5% | 22.2% | 57.3% |
| Down 8-13 (610) | 10.5% | 14.1% | 75.4% |
| Down 14+ (444) | 5.4% | 9.0% | 85.6% |
My read: a one-score deficit at the break is noise for a good team, but two scores changes the game script. The trailing side has to throw, the leading side can grind clock, and that asymmetry is exactly what the bars show.
Break 2Big favourites keep winning even after trailing
This compares each spread band's win rate in all games against its win rate when trailing at half. Favourites of โ10 or more won 84.9% overall and still 58.6% when behind at the break, across 198 games. That is a team the market rated heavily, and the rating mostly survives a poor first half.
The small favourites are the opposite story. At โ1 to โ3 the win rate drops from 55.0% to 28.2% over 1,110 trailing games, meaning a slim favourite behind at the break is closer to a live underdog than a favourite. The middle bands sit between, at 38.1% for โ3.5 to โ6.5 and 44.6% for โ7 to โ9.5.
View the data: favourite win %: all games vs trailing at half
| All games | Trailing at half | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| โ1 to โ3 (1,110 trailing of 2,593) | 55.0% | 28.2% | ยฑ2.6 |
| โ3.5 to โ6.5 (850 trailing of 2,435) | 66.6% | 38.1% | ยฑ3.3 |
| โ7 to โ9.5 (368 trailing of 1,296) | 75.8% | 44.6% | ยฑ5.1 |
| โ10 or more (198 trailing of 902) | 84.9% | 58.6% | ยฑ6.9 |
The ranges widen as samples shrink, with the โ10 or more band carrying a ยฑ6.9 band, so I treat that top figure as directional rather than exact. Still, the gap between the top and bottom bands is far larger than the uncertainty.
Break 3Fair odds lengthen fast beyond one score
Here the win rates become prices. Fair odds are simply one over the observed win frequency: 1.82 down 1-3, 2.34 down 4-7, 4.07 down 8-13 and 6.94 down 14+. If a live market is offering a trailing favourite shorter than those, it is pricing reputation rather than the scoreboard.
The cover column is the sobering one for spread bettors. Excluding pushes, trailing favourites covered 29.7% down 1-3, 21.3% down 4-7, 10.7% down 8-13 and 5.5% down 14+.
| Deficit at half | Games | Fav won | 95% ยฑ | Fair odds | Fav covered |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Down 1-3 | 615 | 54.8% | ยฑ3.9 | 1.82 | 29.7% |
| Down 4-7 | 857 | 42.7% | ยฑ3.3 | 2.34 | 21.3% |
| Down 8-13 | 610 | 24.6% | ยฑ3.4 | 4.07 | 10.7% |
| Down 14+ | 444 | 14.4% | ยฑ3.3 | 6.94 | 5.5% |
These are averages across every spread band, so a โ10 favourite down 4-7 deserves a shorter number than the table, and a โ2 favourite in the same spot a longer one. Combine this table with the spread chart before trusting either alone.
Break 4In hindsight, the trailing favourite was a heavy loser
This chart shows what flat stakes on the pre-game moneyline would have returned, using prices available from 2006. Across 1,867 priced games, backing every trailing favourite returned โ45.8%, while backing the underdog returned +81.3%. Down 14+, the split widens to โ79.4% against +138.1%.
The main caveat sits right here: this is hindsight. Once you know the half-time score, that pre-game price is gone, so these returns describe how results fell against the opening number, not a bet anyone could place at the break.
Hindsight split: the pre-game price is gone once the half-time score is known.
View the data: hindsight moneyline return when the favourite trails
| Back favourite | Back underdog | |
|---|---|---|
| Down 1-3 (450) | โ15.7% | +25.9% |
| Down 4-7 (629) | โ35.6% | +64.0% |
| Down 8-13 (454) | โ65.0% | +118.2% |
| Down 14+ (334) | โ79.4% | +138.1% |
| All (1,867) | โ45.8% | +81.3% |
What I take from it is about live pricing. The pre-game market had the favourite winning far more often than trailing favourites did, so any live line that leans too heavily on that pre-game opinion is where I would look for value on the team in front.
At the break
- Discount small favourites quickly
A โ1 to โ3 favourite behind at half won only 28.2% of games. Treat it as the underdog for the second half, not the better team.
- Respect double-digit favourites
Favourites of โ10 or more still won 58.6% after trailing at the break. A first-half deficit does not erase that gap in quality.
- Fade the comeback cover
Down 8-13, trailing favourites covered just 10.7% excluding pushes. Even when they rally to win, the spread is usually out of reach.
Questions bettors ask
How often does an NFL favourite win when losing at half-time?
Across 2,526 games where the spread favourite trailed at the break, it went on to win 36.3% of the time. That compares with 66.4% for favourites across all games.
Do NFL favourites cover the spread after trailing at half-time?
Rarely. Only 17.9% of trailing favourites covered with pushes excluded, falling to 5.5% when they were down 14 or more at the break.
Is a three-point half-time deficit a problem for the favourite?
Not much for its chances of winning. Favourites down 1-3 at half still won 54.8% of 615 games, which works out to fair odds of 1.82, though they covered only 29.7%.
